The hype for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon (and roughly half of Hollywood,) is very real. The movie doesn’t hit theaters for another year, but its trailer is already crashing the party in front of summer blockbusters like Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth. And because patience is as extinct as the dinosaurs, IMAX tickets are already on sale — and they’re already selling out.
Listings on IMAX’s website are either sold out or the links are broken, and the same issue is occurring on the British Film Institute’s website in the UK. There are currently eBay listings reselling tickets for $100-$150 to see the film at New York City’s Lincoln Square and Regal Georgia Theater. There are even some people selling the film poster for $250, showcasing the excitement surrounding this motion picture.
Most theaters scheduled just one 7 p.m. IMAX screening per day for the opening weekend. As expected, tickets in major cities like New York and Los Angeles were gone within minutes. Within the hour, reports emerged that nearly all IMAX 70mm showings had completely sold out.
Nothing like this has ever happened before, with the closest comparison being The Dark Knight Rises, when Warner Bros. also released 70mm midnight tickets about six months ahead of its 2012 premiere, which also sold out fast. But selling tickets a year in advance has never been done before — The Odyssey is still in production!
There’s still a chance theaters could add more IMAX showings, and a slimmer possibility the release date might shift. But with the limited number of IMAX screens in the U.S., the opportunity to see The Odyssey on opening day, as Christopher Nolan intended, is already looking scarce.
As for the cast, Tom Holland stars as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.
The Odyssey is set to be released on July 17, 2026.
