The Misadventures of Sirfetch & Pichu is coming in 2027, and it’ll be a hoot based on the brief new footage shared during Tuesday’s Pokémon Presents livestream.
In the few seconds shared by Aardman Studios founder Peter Lord, a Wooloo is visible in the foreground as it chews some grass. In the background, a Farfetch is running around with a Pichu, seemingly in some sort of wild conflict. It’s stop motion, as you would expect, but it’s looking good! You can almost imagine touching the clay. Though it’s too early to tell, based on the title and the medieval music, the adventure might take us on a romp with a knight. Is Farfetch going to be more Lancelot or Don Quixote? I’m guessing the latter, given the comedy.
If the preview is short, it’s likely because the show is still in the works, with a set release window of sometime in 2027. “It will give a unique look at the Pokémon in the world, told from the perspective of Pokémon, with the signature Aardman sense of character and comedy and craft,” says Lord. It’ll also take place in a region we’ve never seen before, which is exciting.
Beyond Wallace and Gromit, Aardman is known for titles such as Chicken Run and the occasional toe dip into licensed properties, like a short for Star Wars: Visions. The critically acclaimed studio is behind the most successful stop-motion films of all time. It’s an animation style that Pokémon is doubling down on at the moment as well, between this and the Netflix show Pokémon Concierge, which mimics a similar look, albeit with a more tactile bent, like including monsters made out of felt.
