“Steve’s Lava Chicken” fans, rejoice: A Minecraft Movie will make its global streaming debut on Max starting next week.
A Minecraft Movie follows four everyday misfits — newly orphaned siblings Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Natalie (Emma Myers), down-on-his-luck ’80s arcade champion Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), and real-estate hustler Dawn (Danielle Brooks) — as they’re pulled into the pixelated world of Minecraft. The group must learn to survive the imaginative terrain of the Overworld, face off against hostile mobs like Piglins and zombies, and team up with an expert builder named Steve (Jack Black) to find their way home.
A Minecraft Movie is one of the most successful films of 2025, garnering $951.5 million worldwide, but the road to get there was paved in block-shaped speed bumps.
A Minecraft Movie was in development for nearly a decade before it finally hit theaters. The project has seen a revolving door of high-profile talent, starting with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy, who was first attached in its early stages. Rob McElhenney, creator and star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, later attempted a version inspired by the spirit of The Goonies. After that, The Path director Peter Sollett helmed a take focused on “a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers” battling to save the Overworld from an Ender Dragon. The final product began to materialize in 2022, when Jared Hess signed on as director, with Momoa also joining as a producer.
Now that it’s coming to home streaming, it will be a lot of music fans’ first time hearing Jack Black’s record-breaking Billboard Hot 100 hit “Steve’s Lava Chicken” within the context of the movie. (Jack Black is no stranger to hit gaming tunes.) But what we’re really curious about is whether the enthusiastic fans who saw the film in theaters will bring the chaos home, recreating the Chicken Jockey meme by tossing popcorn and drinks around their living rooms just like they did at the movies.
A Minecraft Movie lands on Max June 20, with its HBO linear premiere airing the next night, Saturday, June 21 at 8 p.m. ET. An American Sign Language (ASL) version of the film will also be available exclusively on Max on the same day.
