One of WD's newest and fastest SSDs - the WD Black SN7100 PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid state drive - is on sale. Ahead of Labor Day, pick up the 4TB size for just $209.99 shipped on Amazon. Although the WD Black SN7100 model was released back in November of 2024, the larger 4TB size came out later in March of 2025, and this is absolutely the lowest price it has ever been. It makes a great drop-in expansion for your PlayStation 5 or a boot drive for your gaming PC.

The WD Black SN7100 is a faster, newer successor to the SN770 and uses the latest in-house Polaris 3 controller and 218-layer TLC 3D NAND flash. It boasts sequential speeds of up to 7,000MB/s read and 6,900MB/s write and random speeds of 900K IOPS read and 1,300K IOPS write. It has an outstanding endurance rating of 2,400TBW (most SSDs have a rating of half of that or less). Gamers will never come close to reaching this rating before it's time to upgrade. The SN7100 is also very energy efficient, consuming less power and producing less heat than most other 4TB SSDs, and the single-sided design means it is slimmer and more universally compatible with mini PCs and ultra-thin laptops.

The main difference between this drive and the more expensive SN8100 (which is currently more than double the price) is that this is a DRAM-less drive. Instead of onboard DRAM for buffering, it uses host memory buffer (HMB) - aka a paltry 64MB of system RAM - instead. Gamers won't notice any performance difference whether it's installed in a PlayStation 5 console or gaming PC, and the substantial cost savings is passed down to you.

The WD Black SN7100 makes for an excellent SSD for your PS5. It fulfills all of Sony's PS5 recommendations, including a M.2 2280 form factor, minimum 5,500MB/s speed, and PCI-E Gen4x4 interface. It doesn't have a preinstalled heatsink but you can get an aftermarket heatsink for about $7 (it's very easy to install). The SSD comes with a five-year warranty.
