Legendary anime director Mamoru Hosoda is back at it again — and his latest project, Scarlet, features a pink-haired warrior princess battling enemies through a wasteland. According to the YouTube description, she’s the titular Princess Scarlet and she wakes up in a mysterious “Land of the Dead” and must avenge her father’s death, or be lost to nothingness and disappear.
The poster is similarly badass, featuring the princess in a blood-soaked white gown, holding up a sword and looking pissed as hell. I cannot wait to see her in action.
Hosoda’s recent movies include the Academy Award nominated Mirai, which follows a young boy who discovers a magical time-traveling garden and Belle, a sci-fi retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which opened to great acclaim at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Some of his past works include Digimon: The Movie and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, a time-travel romance I once watched as a teenager on a 12-hour international flight and it changed my brain chemistry. So with that being said: count me in as super excited for Scarlet.
Scarlet will hit theaters in the United States on December 12.
